Dr. Carlos Cabrera

Dr. Carlos Cabrera is from Mérida and has a Degree in Biological Physicochemistry Sciences and a Medical Degree at the University of Yucatan. He was awarded Doctor of the Year in 2008, because of his achievements working in two remote communities during his social service. That same year he attended the 17th International AIDS Conference in México City. This was life changing for him and he first became involved with BAI that same year as its Medical Director, establishing free rapid HIV testing and counselling programs, linking positive clients to available treatments. He consolidated our respected Peer-to-Peer Education program, taking it from the Mayan villages into the State's High School System. He has tailored our Care programs, offering free psychotherapy and nutrition consultations. He is currently a specialist in the care of patients living with HIV and other sexually transmitted infections and BAI´s Chief Executive Officer. He is very proud of what has been achieved to date but there is so much more to do!

He is currently studying as a specialist in health promotion at the National Public Health Institute, mainly motivated by his five years experience in Brazos, where he began as a medical assistant and counsellor until he was promoted to the research committee as a co-ordinator, helped by his background in HIV/AIDS research and other educational and community activities. He is President of the Board of Directors.

Living through the height of the AIDS epidemic in Toronto and helping many friends who came into contact with the disease, David developed a strong appreciation for the complexities and strengths of a community successfully living with AIDS.
